Stanley Black & Decker and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) partnered to develop nine Maker Badges for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors (grades K–5). The badges, including Art and Design, Craft and Tinker, and Create and Innovate for each level, were launched nationally in July 2023. This program empowers Girl Scouts to delve into a diverse range of creative pursuits, encouraging them to embark on projects that ignite inspiration and drive innovation. They explore their creativity through DIY experiences and learn about the materials, tools, and processes to make art and objects for others. Girl Scouts bring their ideas to life and strengthen their self-confidence as they make and build things to find innovative solutions to everyday challenges. Apart from building skills, Girl Scouts also learn about essential concepts like safety, sustainability, and related careers as a tradesperson.

  • Art and Design: Girl Scouts examine different styles and elements of art and design. They explore how art and design are all around us, from the painting on the wall to the label and design of a water bottle. They create their own artistic masterpieces by using mediums of their choice, which they can share with the troop or more broadly.
  • Craft and Tinker: Girl Scouts focus on crafting objects to solve problems. They explore how things are built with different purposes and users in mind. Girl Scouts look into such concepts as form, fit, and function and practice using tools. They then tinker with one of their projects to make it even better.
  • Create and Innovate: Girl Scouts explore prototyping, the design thinking process, and how products and objects are created, improved, and even sold. They look at user-centered design and making to solve problems for others as they complete multiple projects, one of which they innovate and share with others.

Through this partnership, we aim to inspire Girl Scouts to become makers and tradespeople that create a more sustainable world. Stanley Black & Decker is also providing grants to select Girl Scout councils to help even more girls develop their creativity.
